Target Audience

This seminar addresses issues relevant to mental health professionals treating the client who reports new memories of past abuse during the course of therapy. Focus will be placed upon enhancing quality of care to this client population, while also protecting the therapist from legal and media backlash.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:
1. Understand the psychobiology of normal and delayed memory;
2. Be familiar with the standard of care for clients exhibiting psychogenic amnesia and delayed recall of traumatic events;
3. Recognize professional and legal implications of the "False Memory" movement;
4. Know how to avoid unduly influencing client recollections;
5. Be able to apply risk management principles to clinical practice.

Sheralyn Cox, Ph.D.

Sherry has maintained a private psychoterapy practice since 1974 and has obtained specialized post-graduate training in hypnosis and treatment of trauma disorders. She is a member of the International Society for the Study of Traumatic Stress, the International Society for the Study of Dissociation, and the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. She is certified in clinical hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, for which she is also an approved teaching consultant.

Continuing Education Credits

Psychotherapy Associates is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. 11.0 CE hours will be issued. Psychotherapy Associates maintains responsibility for the program.

 

This seminar meets criteria of an approved 11.0 credit hour continuing education program for Nebraska Licensed Mental Health Practitioners.
